Ione Skye, now 54, is currently promoting her new memoir, Say Everything, in which she
shares deeply personal stories about her life in the public eye. In the book, she reflects on her career, past relationships, and the experiences that shaped her. One of the key inspirations behind writing the memoir was her relationship with Anthony Kiedis, the
frontman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Skye revealed that a recent wave of discussions
about their relationship on social media encouraged her to finally share her side of the story.
Speaking to People, she recalled seeing TikTok users analyzing her past romance with Kiedis. “These girls on TikTok were saying things like, ‘How could my mom let me be with Anthony?’” she said. Rather than ignoring the comments, she felt compelled to respond. “I sort of clapped back, not in an aggressive way, but I was like, ‘Well, my mom was really upset that I was with a rockstar like Anthony Kiedis.’” That moment led her to realize she had a lot to say about her past and that she was ready to tell her story in full.
Skye’s relationship with Kiedis began when she was just 16 years old—the same age she landed her breakout role as Diane Court in Say Anything, the iconic 1989 film directed by Cameron Crowe. At the time, Kiedis was 24, making their relationship an often-discussed topic both then and now.
In Say Everything, Skye reveals details about their time together, including a deeply personal chapter about an unplanned pregnancy. She shares that at 17, she became pregnant with Kiedis’ child, but after much thought, they made the difficult decision not to keep the baby. One of the key factors in her choice was Kiedis’ ongoing struggle with heroin addiction.
“I was taking care of myself now, making a choice that felt good and important for my future,” she writes in the book, as reported by People. “I would not have a baby at 17, with someone who didn’t want to be a dad, wouldn’t commit to me, and had anger issues. Not to mention the heroin.”
The relationship was complex, filled with both passion and challenges, and ultimately, Skye moved on. However, Kiedis would later write about their time together in his own memoir, Scar Tissue. Because of that, Skye feels at peace about including details of their relationship in her own book.
Speaking on Radio Andy’s The Julia Cunningham Show, she admitted she had some concerns about how Kiedis might react to the book but ultimately felt justified in sharing her truth. “I didn’t want to hurt him… But I also knew that he wrote—he basically said a lot of stuff in his book, so I thought, ‘Okay, well, that’s alright.’”
Despite their complicated history, Skye insists that there is still mutual respect between them. “We have love for each other still,” she shared. “We don’t see each other a lot, but when we bump into each other, Anthony and I—so, yeah, I kind of felt like I knew I would convey also that there was a tenderness and also a concern.”
Looking back, Skye admitted she wishes she had met that entire circle of musicians and artists later in life, rather than becoming romantically involved at such a young age. “I could have skipped doing it at that point in my life and getting that involved, for sure,” she reflected. “So that’s something I would change. Just knowing them is fine. But how I knew him is something I would change.”
Beyond her relationship with Kiedis, Say Everything dives into other aspects of Skye’s past, including a brief romance with the late Friends star Matthew Perry. The two had starred together in the 1988 film A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, alongside River Phoenix. At the time, Skye had developed a crush on Phoenix, but years later, it was Perry with whom she ended up getting romantically involved, albeit briefly.
The memoir also provides behind-the-scenes stories from Say Anything, the beloved film that cemented her as a pop culture icon. In it, she starred opposite John Cusack, and the film remains one of her most well-known roles to this day.
