Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced on Friday that Marko Elez,
a former staffer who resigned after being linked to racist social media posts, will be reinstated.
The decision comes after both President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance expressed strong support for giving Elez a second chance,
with Musk confirming the move on X (formerly Twitter).
Elez, a 25-year-old engineer, had been linked to a controversial X account (@nullllptr)
that contained offensive posts, including derogatory remarks about people from India and support for a “eugenic immigration policy.”
The account, which was later deleted, reportedly featured posts like “Normalize Indian hate” and “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.” In another post, Elez allegedly expressed a desire for the destruction of both Gaza and Israel.
The controversy surrounding Elez’s past social media activity prompted him to resign from his position with DOGE at the Treasury Department earlier this week. The resignation followed a report from the *Wall Street Journal* that linked the offensive posts to Elez, based on the pseudonym used on the now-deleted X account. The article revealed that the account owner had also described themselves as a SpaceX employee, further tying Elez to the posts.

Vance tweeted, “Here’s my view: I obviously disagree with some of Elez’s posts, but I don’t think stupid social media activity should ruin a kid’s life.” The vice president added that while Elez’s past actions were regrettable, they should not define his future. “We shouldn’t reward journalists who try to destroy people. Ever. So I say bring him back,” Vance stated. He further emphasized that if Elez were found to be incompetent or inappropriate for his role, he could be dismissed on those grounds, rather than his social media past.
President Trump, although not initially familiar with the situation, sided with Vance’s stance. When asked by reporters, he said, “If the vice president said that – did you say that?
