In her first interview since the devastating death of her boyfriend, Liam Payne, Kate Cassidy has shared her emotions and the heartbreaking moment she learned of the singer’s passing.
Payne, a former member of the global sensation One Direction, tragically died on October 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
At the time, Cassidy was in the country with Payne but had flown back to Florida just days before the incident.
In an emotional conversation with *The Sun*, Cassidy revealed that she still struggles to accept the reality of Liam’s death
saying, “It still doesn’t feel fully real for me that he’s not here.”
The couple had been enjoying a positive chapter in their relationship, and she had no idea that her last days with him would be their final moments together.
Reflecting on her decision to leave Buenos Aires just before the tragedy, Cassidy explained that she had responsibilities back home, primarily taking care of their dog, Nala. “We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur,” she explained. “It was a tragic accident, and no, I never did think [he might die young].” She emphasized that this wasn’t the first time they had traveled separately, and despite that, she never anticipated that Payne’s life would end in such a tragic manner. “I just never thought this would have happened, that it would turn out the way it did,” Cassidy said, still grappling with the unexpected loss.
The heartbreaking news hit Cassidy in a deeply personal way. She had sent Liam a text message that would become her last communication with him. “I can’t wait for you to get home and see the house,” she had written to him, having decorated their home for Halloween as a surprise for when he returned. This thoughtful gesture would later serve as a painful reminder of what was lost. Just days after his death, Cassidy received a message from a man she had hired to fix the Halloween decorations, asking if Liam had liked his surprise. This message was a painful realization of the finality of his absence.
Cassidy recounted the emotional moment when she learned of Liam’s death, sharing how the news was broken to her. “I feel blessed I didn’t find out over social media because I just couldn’t even imagine that,” she said. At the time, she was at home with their dog, scrolling through TikTok, when one of Liam’s friends called her. “That moment, it’s like blank; it’s blacked out in my head,” she remembered. Initially, she did not believe it. “I thought it was just a rumour. Or something that somebody made up just to get views. Then instantly, I just had a bad feeling in my gut. I was like, ‘Why would somebody make this up? Is this true?’”
When she finally confirmed the news, Cassidy described feeling numb. “I tried to call him. I called pretty much everybody. Then I was in touch with his family, and my mum got the first flight out to be with me,” she recalled. The emotional weight of the moment was overwhelming, and she found herself pacing around the house in a state of shock. Her dog, Nala, was confused by her distress, jumping up at her, as she could not sleep at all that night.
In the aftermath of Payne’s death, five people have been charged in connection with the incident. Three individuals are facing charges of manslaughter, while two others are accused of supplying cocaine. Payne’s death was caused by “polytrauma,” a term used to describe multiple traumatic injuries.
Payne’s funeral was held in November in Buckinghamshire, where friends, family, and former bandmates gathered to mourn the loss of the 31-year-old musician. Among the attendees were his ex-partner, Cheryl, and their son Bear, along with fellow One Direction members Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, who all paid their respects to their late friend and bandmate.
After One Direction went on hiatus, Liam Payne pursued a successful solo career, releasing his debut album *LP1* in December 2019. The album featured hits like “Polaroid,” “Strip That Down” featuring Quavo, and “For You” with Rita Ora, marking a new phase in his musical journey.
