Savannah Guthrie took on an extended role on Today on Monday, March 3,
stepping in to co-anchor Today With Jenna & Friends alongside her longtime friend and colleague, Jenna Bush Hager.
After completing her usual hosting duties on the main Today show earlier in the morning,
Guthrie remained on set to join Hager for the 10 a.m. hour, much to the delight of fans.
Since Hoda Kotb’s departure from the fourth-hour program in January, Hager has been leading the show with an ever-changing lineup of celebrity guest co-hosts.
However, on this particular morning, she was joined by someone from within the Today family.
The show’s official social media account built anticipation for the episode, sharing a post the day before that read, “Our queen of the early hours of TODAY will be sticking around to co-host with JBH tomorrow morning! We can’t wait to have you, @savannahguthrie!”
While Guthrie’s guest stint appeared to be a one-time occurrence, it has fueled speculation regarding her long-term plans at NBC. With Kotb’s exit already shaking up the show’s lineup, viewers have begun to wonder whether Guthrie might also be considering a shift in her role or even an eventual departure.
In a recent interview, Guthrie addressed the uncertainty surrounding her future but kept her response open-ended. “What I know now is that I have the best job with the best people, both on camera and behind the scenes,” she told Us Weekly. “We’re doing important work and [it’s] fun. Who knows what the future holds? I’m open, but I’m pretty darn happy.”
Her appearance on the later segment of Today has led some to question whether she might be contemplating a permanent move to the 10 a.m. hour. With no official announcement from NBC about a full-time replacement for Kotb, it remains to be seen if Guthrie will make the switch or if the network will continue rotating co-hosts alongside Hager.
Beyond her professional commitments, Guthrie is a devoted mother who frequently expresses how much she values her family life. She and her husband, Michael Feldman, share two children, and the journalist has been candid about her journey to motherhood. Having had her children later in life, Guthrie has reflected on the challenges and joys of balancing a successful career with raising a family.
During her interview with Us Weekly, Guthrie spoke about her personal life, revealing how her path to finding love and starting a family was not always smooth. “When I was 36, I got divorced [from Mark Orchard],” she shared. “I wasn’t married long. That was a huge disappointment. I was pretty sure that I had lost my opportunity [to become a mom] and more or less ruined my life. All I ever really wanted was to fall in love, be a mom, and have a family. I don’t know if it’s acceptable to admit these days, but that’s kind of how I was. I wanted to do something important and meaningful, but I really wanted a family.”
Guthrie’s openness about her personal struggles and triumphs has resonated with many fans, further solidifying her place as a beloved figure on morning television. While her recent guest co-hosting stint on Today With Jenna & Friends may have been a one-time occasion, it certainly reignited discussions about what’s next for her in the industry.
As of now, NBC has not made any formal statements regarding Guthrie’s potential shift in role or a long-term replacement for Kotb. For the time being, Guthrie remains an essential part of the Today team, balancing her morning show responsibilities with her dedication to family. Whether she continues in her current capacity or takes on a new role, her impact on the network and its viewers remains undeniable.
